A scheme aiming to raise funds for Tyneside foodbanks has won new supporters following successful trial events in 2024.
A Pint For The Foodbanks is the brainchild of RA!SE, a not-for-profit publication setup by the multi-disciplinary culture brand Passarella, founded by Tyneside-born Danny Broddle. The concept allows pub-goers to donate to North East food banks simply by buying a pint in participating bars.
Following the initial success, legendary Manchester DJ Justin Robertson, famed for his eclectic sets at the Hacienda nightclub, has thrown his support behind the scheme ahead of playing a special set in Ouseburn on March 15.
In 2024, RA!SE ran two successful trials, in North Shields and Ouseburn, and more pubs and bars are now getting behind the fundraiser.
RA!SE has again joined forces with North Shields brewers Three Kings Brewery to craft a special, citrusy beer called RA!SE Pilsner. The Tanners Arms in Ouseburn will meanwhile play host to a special set by Justin on March 15 (7pm-midnight). Whitley Bay destinations The Split Chimp and Gilbert & Smith will also be serving RA!SE Pilsner on March 15.
“Our publication reports on global humanitarian issues,” said Danny. “100% of the profits from each issue goes to the cause we feature. It’s nothing short of a national disgrace that we have one happening right in front of our eyes here in the UK. Three million people felt the need to rely on a foodbank last year. Among them are people who keep our society propped up – working teachers, NHS staff and millions of others besides. We want as many people as possible to come and support the fundraiser. The concept is very simple – buy a pint of RA!SE Pilsner and all profits from your purchase will go towards Newcastle Foodbanks, who will then distribute that money among the foodbanks they support in this region.”
RA!SE will be using the day to highlight its short-form publication, which has a special focus on the UK food poverty crisis. Previous issues of RA!SE have shone a light on global human rights issues such as human trafficking, the environmental consequences of fast fashion, and the Ukraine War.
Ewan McCann from Three Kings Brewers said: “We’re honoured to be doing our bit for A Pint For The Foodbanks, so we hope for a great turnout and plenty of people supporting the night across all the participating venues in Whitley Bay and Newcastle. These issues are far too common for anyone to feel comfortable about in our part of the world so we have to do what we can to support them.”
Daz Goodwin from The Tanners Arms added: “When we were approached by Danny and the RA!SE team, it was a no-brainer for us and we raised hundreds of pounds from our regulars. We’re a community-based pub and it’s a sad fact that so many in our community are blighted by the need to use foodbanks. We’re thrilled Justin will be playing – it’s going to make it an unmissable night.”
Newcastle Foodbank operates seven sites, including locations in the West End of the city, in Benwell and off Westgate Road, Leamington, Heaton, Denton and Byker. John McCorry, CEO of Newcastle Foodbank, said: “While in recent months we have seen some of our busiest periods on record, thankfully with the generous and ongoing support of donors and volunteers we are able to help people in need from across the city. We’re incredibly grateful to RA!SE and their friends in the North East independent pub and brewing scene for supporting our charity’s work in communities throughout Newcastle.”
